Prosthetic Designs

When a patient is in need of a prosthetic device, the process can seem overwhelming at first. However, knowing what to expect along the way can help you navigate the process while getting your questions answered and your concerns adequately addressed. Our prosthetic specialists are always available to talk with you about your needs, treatment goals, and any concerns you might have about the prosthetic design process.

What to Expect

During the Prosthetic Design Process

Evaluation and Consultation

The prosthetic design process always begins with a comprehensive patient evaluation and consultation in addition to a thorough review of the patient's medical records provided by their primary care team. During this initial appointment, our prosthetist talks with the patient about their treatment needs, expectations, goals, and concerns. Once we have a clear understanding of the patient's needs and desires, we then recommend a personalized treatment plan, prosthetic technologies, and proposed prosthetic design.

At this time, we can also gather the patient's insurance information and work with their providers to determine the most cost-effective treatment strategies.

Limb Impression and Fabrication

Each prosthetic is designed specifically for the patient's unique specifications. The fitting begins with a recording and impression of the shape and characteristics of the patient's limb. This process typically involves measurements, castings, digital scanning, and/or direct fabrication over the limb. Once the impression is complete, fabrication begins in our on-site laboratory.

Test Fitting and Alignment

Once fabricated, we schedule a test fitting and alignment appointment during which we evaluate the fit, comfort, and functionality of the prosthetic while the patient is at rest and in action. This helps ensure high functionality, superior comfort, safety, and stability during any activity.

If any adjustments are needed, they will be made before the delivery of your completed prosthetic.

Patient Education, Counseling, and Guidance

No matter where you are in the process of getting, maintaining, or adjusting to living with a prosthetic device, our specialists are here to offer you their support, knowledge, and guidance. We understand that this time can be stressful, and through our years of experience, we have found that the best way to ease our patients' anxiety is with knowledge and professional support.

We are here for you, and we always welcome you to contact our office with any questions or concerns you might have about your treatment progress, prosthetic preparation, or your prosthetic device and its design, fit, and function.
